No matter how open minded we are we can easily get into the habit of looking at things from one perspective, namely ours. that’s why we all need a regular brain and eye transplant.
For the avoidance of doubt here I am speaking metaphorically not physically but in order to see things in a different way we need new thoughts and new insights. Effective people realise that the answer often lies outside of themselves or their organisation.
The source of this may be new employees, consultants, training, trade groups or any number of other areas. It may be just setting aside thirty minutes or an hour every day to read what is going on in your industry and more importantly outside of your industry. Seeing how ideas used to solve one problem can be used to solve a completely different one is one of the skills of an effective person. Seeing how people from outside the industry can bring new ideas and insight is the sign of an effective manager.
Effective people know that they must free up time to enable them to see differently. Yes, it’s easy to say and difficult to do but most things worth doing are like that. The effective leader make sure they have the time.
What will you do to get a new perspective on your organisation? It need not be as radical as a brain transplant but the results can be equally impressive.
I’m currently looking at the cheese industry to solve a packaging problem I have in my honey business. In the past I have looked at things such as the plastics industry to solve a problem producing chocolate bars, dentistry to solve an aviation issue and pizza cutters for the laminate floor industry.
Change your thoughts and where you look and the answer may be just around the corner.
Fresh eyes and fresh thoughts (from you or someone else) bring about effective decisions.
