In a previous blog https://www.wellsassoc.co.uk/why-digitalisation-changes-everything/ we looked at why digitalisation removes the need for people to do jobs that can be defined and how this is true in all areas., service and manufacturing. This is why soft skills are becoming more important and effective employers are realising this when recruiting.
In a recent report “The Job Market Outlook For Grads” Ian Siegel CEO of ZipRecruiter said over 93% of employers thought soft skills play a critical role in their decision about whom they want to hire.
The skills identified by ZipRecruiter were:
Communication skills, customer service, scheduling, time management, project management, analytical thinking, ability to work independently and flexibility.
With the exception of project management I would agree these are all essential soft skills and they all have the same characteristic – they are difficult to digitalise.
Interestingly, and somewhat worryingly leadership does not appear on the list!!!
Even more worryingly, these are not the skills taught by most schools and universities. the ability of some people to manage their own time, work independently and communicate effectively seems to be getting worse.
Soft skills used to be looked upon as second class skills but increasingly they will become the only ones in demand from humans. A.I. can get on with the rest.
