Why Recycling Is Not Effective

Much emphasis is put on recycling but we need to understand why recycling is not effective.

To be effective we must be moving toward our ultimate goal. If our ultimate goal is net zero or even negative carbon production then recycling is not effective.

Standard wisdom says that we should make the most efficient use of resources and generate less carbon and pollution in general in order to save the planet. Effectiveness says we should use less of those resources or, to be truly effective, not use them at all.

Recycling plastic bags, paper and cardboard etc is a sensible first step but is not effective.

Effective people follow the lead of Kindle. Books use paper, ink, power and transport. Even books on how to be green and books on minimalism use all of these resources and yet the Kindle is the ultimate environmentally effective device. Once you have one (and you only need one) you have access to thousands of books. None of these books have used one piece of paper, have needed to be stored in a warehouse or shop or transported anywhere. They don’t need to be recycled because they do not exist in the first place. Effective!!

Efficient environmentalists read books on recycled paper. Effective environmentalists read books on a Kindle.

Efficiency won’t save the planet but effectiveness might.
