Whether we like it or not the world is changing faster that at any time in human history and the rate of disruption looks set to increase. Disruption is inevitable and that’s why organised disruption is the way ahead.
Too many individuals and far too many managers / leaders are disruptees rather than disrupters. They are subject to disruption rather than the cause of it. If you and your organisation are going to be subject to disruption, and you are, better to the than the receiver.
Good organisations and great leaders surround themselves with people who will shake things up. the really successful companies, Apple, Amazon, Netflix etc etc are there because they refused to sit back and accept change, they were the cause of change. They disrupted their markets and won but now they need to do it again and again and again. It never stops.
The future is not the past. In so many areas trying to preserve the past is just good money after bad. The high street is dead for shopping, it’s happened, it’s over. If you are stuck with a high street shop then your only chance is to come up with a disruptive idea for it or employ someone who will. Education and training are changing out of all recognition. Schools and Universities need to be disruptive in this area or they too will disappear. Accountancy will shortly largely disappear due to Make tax Digital and other digitalisation projects. The accountancy firms and accountants that survive will be the disrupters. Nothing, but nothing is guaranteed. Well apart from disruption that is.
Waiting for normality to return is just plain stupid. What we are experiencing today is the new normality but only for today. Tomorrow it will be different again.
To be effective you must constantly employ organised disruption. It’s the only way ahead.
What will you disrupt today in order to make tomorrow better?
