We train people in all sorts of technical areas. We would not expect an engineer, doctor or accountant to have “picked it up as they go along” so why do we expect everyone to be a natural leader?
We promote people from a position of technical competence where they have been trained into a leadership role and expect them to naturally adopt the skills of a leader.
If we are to move forward we need to understand that leadership is a skill that, like all the others can be taught. Let’s bring leaders up to the same level of expertise as any other technical person.
Effective leaders are trained not born.
