Note taking is a vital part of personal and business life but why are handwritten notes more effective than typed?
In an article written in Science News For Students https://www.sciencenewsforstudents.org/article/handwriting-better-for-notes-memory-typing as well as many other studies it has been found that handwritten notes are better than typed for learning and memory retention.
This fortunately applies to both ink pen and paper and a digital stylus.
Hand writing notes gives the brain more hooks upon which memories can be hung according to neuroscientist Audrey van der Meer. The same movement is required no matter what letter is typed on a keyboard but when the letter is handwritten it is different each time and hence the brain needs to think about it as well as retrieve memories.
This act appears to “open up the brain for learning”
The brain also needs to be selective in what is taken down in the note in order to be effective.
For those of us looking for the most effective solution then using an organised digital note taking system is the best way to the problem.
In later blogs we will look at different systems but for now get that apple pen or digital stylus and start using it for your notes. You will really notice the difference.
If you want to look at this further we have both manufacturing and service simulations to enable everyone to be more effective then please contact us for details – https://www.wellsassoc.co.uk/contact/
