Planning is really important. We all know the saying fail to plan and you plan to fail but too much planning is ineffective. It’s actions that cause things to happen, not plans.
Very often planning can be used as an excellent excuse for inaction and procrastination. “We can’t start yet, we haven’t covered all the angles.” “We need a contingency plan for every eventuality.” I’m sure we have all done the revision timetable plan in the run up to an exam and taken a huge amount of time to produce a beautiful timetable and then had to cram the night before as we have run out of time. Sometime you must just start.
Eventually you just have to accept that you have reached the limit of reasonable planning and you need to get underway. Few things are perfect at the beginning and often we need to revise as we go along but revision is better than inaction.
Planning is so important, but it is for preparation only and not the main event. Set a limit to how much planning you will do and most of all set a date when all planning must end and action must begin.
