A couple of days ago I wrote about the Ivy Lee Method Ivy Lee Method and now we move to the Pomodoro Technique as an extension of that.
Named after the tomato shaped timer this technique make use of the brain’s natural ability to work well in short bursts. The technique is as follows:
- Identify the tasks to be completed (see the Ivy Lee blog for details).
- Set the timer for between 20 and 25 minutes (I use 25).
- Work on the tasks in order.
- Take a short break of 5 minutes after each of the first three sessions and a longer break of 20 minutes (coffee time) after the fourth.
- Repeat.
If you are delivering a presentation that lasts longer than 25 minutes then use this technique to maintain the interest of your audience by telling a short story or showing a video every 25 minutes in order to reset their brains into attention mode.
You can get apps to help you or just use the timer on your phone – either way please give it a go.
The tomato is the most effective of fruits (or vegetables or whatever).
