Qualifications are really important in certain areas. I want my doctor, solicitor and optician to be fully qualified but the things I value in effective people are not based on qualifications. Here are ten effective things that don’t require qualifications.
- Being on time. Some people seem to think that keeping others waiting is a sign of their power. It’s not. It’s just rude and incompetent.
- Being passionate. In order to be effective you need to be passionate about the subject.
- Respecting others. The person who sweeps the floor well is just as deserving of respect as an effective CEO.
- Being organised. You don’t need a lean six sigma qualification to be organised.
- Constant learning. Someone who is constantly learning and keeping up to date but does not get the piece of paper is more effective than someone who got the piece of paper and stopped learning.
- A questioning attitude. To be effective you must question everything. Blind acceptance of what you are taught is not effective.
- A positive attitude. Often a positive unqualified person will be more effective than a negative qualified one.
- A constant desire to do your best. Someone who just does enough to scrape through a qualification because that is all they need to do is not using their talents effectively. Anyone who tries their hardest is to be encouraged.
- An ability to use the phrase “I don’t know” especially if it is followed up by “I will find out”. People who feel that an admission that they don’t know something are very dangerous. Admitting you don’t know is a sign of strength, not weakness.
- An ability to lead themselves. If you can’t lead yourself. you can’t be effective.
There you have it then. Ten things that make people effective whether or not they have qualifications. When you are next recruiting check out your candidate against those ten as well as any necessary qualifications and / or experience.
