I keep hearing the phrase “it’s great that we are getting back to normal” and it got me thinking – what’s so great about normal?
The pandemic has been a total disaster for so many people around the world. Some have died, others are left with long covid but for the rest of us it is the biggest opportunity we have had in generations.
To be fair we are seeing the “great resignation” where many people have taken the opportunity to re-evaluate their lives and many of us have grasped the chance to change and reorganise our businesses either along lines we were thinking about pre-pandemic or a total revamp as a result of the crisis.
We have had two years of not being normal and this has presented so many opportunities. Now is the time to take advantage of the opportunities this situation has presented.
Why then do so many people want to return to normal?
I believe the answer is simple. When people were forced to change and given instructions, they changed but as soon as those instructions were removed they were lost. This is worth remembering for the future. If people will only follow instructions and not change as a result of their own actions then artificial intelligence and general automation looks very attractive. A robot that does as it is told is far more effective than a human that just does as they are told.
If you want you or your business to survive and hopefully thrive in the future then there is nothing great about normal.
