In the world in which we find ourselves it has to be said that open questions are the work of the lazy and uncaring. If you want to impress don’t ask open questions.
Many years ago information was difficult to obtain and so questions like “tell me about your business” or “tell me about yourself” were much more acceptable. Today, with information being available at the touch of a button then going into a meeting or discussion unprepared just shows laziness at best and disinterest at worst.
Which would you prefer? An advisor who begins a conversation with you by saying “looking at your website I see that ………… is important to you. How does the situation with ………… affect you and your business?” OR
“Tell me about your business.”
One says I have invested a small amount of time and effort to get to know something about you and your concerns. The other say I can’t be bothered to even look on your website – you tell me.
Which one do you feel will be more effective with new and existing clients / customers? Which one is more likely to build trust?
You choose, but I prefer the first one which is so much more effective.
