Five Steps To Becoming Effective

Assuming that you are signed up to the idea of becoming more effective then how do you go about it? Here are five steps to becoming effective.

STEP ONE – SET THE GOAL / OBJECTIVE

Without this you are lost. You need to very carefully consider what is your ultimate goal or objective. Why are you as an individual or organisation doing what you are doing? Before moving on you need to finalise the goal and also your timescale for achieving it.

STEP TWO – WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO GET TO YOUR GOAL?

Now we have the ultimate goal, how are we going to get there? What are the steps you need to achieve along the way? Setting a timeline with measurable goals along the way is the only way forward. These goals need to be achievable and the timescales need to be reasonably short, Monthly or Quarterly is best.

STEP THREE – MEASURE PROGRESS

Any goal you set must be measurable. Although you will have short term milestones you need to measure progress along the way, daily or weekly. Set in place systems to enable you to measure progress and to adapt and change as external problems try to push you off course. Make sure you review everything regularly.

STEP FOUR – DO FIRST THINGS FIRST

Every day ensure that you do those things that move you toward your goal first and everything else afterwards. The Ivy Lee Method will really help here and you need to plan your day around this.

STEP FIVE – SHARE THE GOAL

If you are in an organisation then the ultimate goal needs to be shared with everyone in the organisation. If you don’t do this then don’t complain when people do things that send the organisation off course. If you are doing it as an individual then share the goal with others. There is nothing like making your goal public to ensure that you really work toward it.

A journey of one thousand miles starts with one step but make sure that step is in the right direction.
