Effective Leaders Start With Themselves

One of the mistakes so many leadership courses make is that they teach how to lead others but forget that effective leaders start with themselves. If you can’t lead yourself then you stand no chance leading others.

One of the founders of VISA, Dee Hock is famous for saying “if you want to lead, invest at least 40% of your time in leading yourself.” This is excellent advice. Why would anyone follow someone who is a shambles and is without the ability to lead themselves toward their own goal?

If you want to be a leader make sure you have yourself sorted out first.

Do you have a vision of your own? If not, spend some time working out what your vision is.

Have you made time to lead yourself towards it? The Ivy Lee Method – How To Have An Effective Day and then have you made time to lead others?

A leader needs to command respect and that can only happen when the leader has a vision for themselves that they share with others and show their followers that they are truly dedicated to moving closer to that vision every day.

Even if you don’t have a team, you need to lead yourself. No matter what your circumstances, sort out your vision and start leading yourself towards it. Only then will you be effective.
